We met as members of the same doctoral cohort at Teachers College, Columbia University and had been working in collaboration with one another in some form or another since 2012. Because of our course overlap, we began discussing how we had structured our syllabi and realized that the emphasis of each course was quite different. Through these conversations, we realized that we were teaching courses that had the same goals for preparing elementary school literacy educators in completely different ways. At one point, we looked at each other and both said, “Am I teaching this wrong?”

These conversations led us to think about the paths that we took to become teacher educators who now prepared new elementary school reading and writing teachers. Amy studied elementary education as a college undergraduate. As a classroom teacher, she taught fourth-grade general education in Massachusetts. She then obtained a Master of Education in reading in a clinically-oriented program. She learned to assess readers and writers using a variety of assessments to determine needs and provide targeted intervention. She then completed a doctoral degree in curriculum and teaching with a concentration in literacy. She has worked as co-director of a summer literacy clinic and as a literacy staff developer. Her experiences as a staff developer at schools across New York City and around the country led her to explore issues of educational inequity and its impact on both teachers and students.

Laurie is a former elementary school special education teacher who also taught fourth grade. Unlike Amy, she did not study education as an undergraduate. Instead, she entered the classroom through an alternative certification program in New York City. During that time, she obtained a master’s degree in special education with a focus on learning disabilities. This program also emphasized clinical teaching in literacy with a focus on supporting students who had been classified with speech and language and specific learning disabilities. She went on to get a second master’s degree in educational leadership and became a school administrator who provided professional development in literacy. Laurie’s doctoral focus was on inclusive education, where she thought about how literacy instruction produced disabling contexts for students.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://sustainingdisabilityidentities.domains.skidmore.edu/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot-2025-06-09-at-1.49.46-PM-1.png” title_text=”Screenshot 2025-06-09 at 1.49.46 PM” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://sustainingdisabilityidentities.domains.skidmore.edu/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot-2025-06-09-at-1.48.41-PM.png” title_text=”Screenshot 2025-06-09 at 1.48.41 PM” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”–et_global_body_font||||||||” text_font_size=”16px” global_colors_info=”{}”]

These different paths led us to different theoretical orientations and literacy teaching practice. This was puzzling as we both identified ourselves as balanced literacy-informed educators. For Laurie, balanced literacy was about providing students with individualized goal-based instruction that targeted the different pillars of literacy to ensure that students all reach a goal of strong reading comprehension. For Amy, balanced literacy was about using different instructional approaches to ensure that students were engaged in individualized instruction that met their learning goals and fostered agency, ownership, and positive literacy identities. As we compared our understandings, what stood out as important was that in both our approaches to balanced literacy, teachers make data-informed instructional decisions, selecting from a variety of possible components, in order to best meet the needs of a diverse array of literacy learners in their classroom. We both believed that balanced literacy is naturally infused with principles of access for students with disabilities through its emphasis on balancing meaning-making alongside code-breaking instruction, teaching skills both in isolation and in context through different instructional practices.

As our courses continued, our iterative reflections on our practice informed our discussions. We started to incorporate parts of each other’s approach into our own teacher education coursework. Where we landed was that neither one of us was teaching literacy incorrectly, but that we could each benefit from some of the approaches and concepts that the other one was centering—we could find more of a balance.

That said, we found that there was still a major component that needed further development in our practice. Neither of our enactments of balanced literacy was doing enough to attend to sustaining student identities that had historically been racially and linguistically minoritized. This is how we came to center Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (CSP) as a theoretical model for literacy instruction. CSP not only centers high expectations for all students, but also seeks to help students affirm their cultural identities while also offering spaces for critical perspectives that challenge inequities in schools and other institutions.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://sustainingdisabilityidentities.domains.skidmore.edu/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot-2025-06-09-at-1.49.30-PM.png” title_text=”Screenshot 2025-06-09 at 1.49.30 PM” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”7px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://sustainingdisabilityidentities.domains.skidmore.edu/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Screenshot-2025-06-09-at-1.48.24-PM.png” title_text=”Screenshot 2025-06-09 at 1.48.24 PM” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” height=”551px” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” border_radii=”on|5px|5px|5px|5px” border_width_all=”5px” border_color_all=”#e5236f” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” text_font=”–et_global_body_font||||||||” text_text_color=”#e5236f” text_font_size=”16px” custom_margin=”3px|||||” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Our work is about our mutual understanding of balanced literacy as a vehicle for responsive, effective literacy instruction.
